Wike, PDP Chieftains In Court As Ex-Plateau Gov’s Fraud Trial Resumes

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, and some chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday stormed the Plateau State High Court sitting in Jos where a former Governor of the state, Jonah Jang is being arraigned.

Wike and the PDP chieftains arrived at the court premises around 9.50 a.m.

The former governor, Jang, is standing trial for misappropriation of state funds during his tenure in office.

Jang is standing trial alongside Yusuf Pam, an ex-cashier in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the State, on alleged N6.3bn fraud charges brought before the court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The two accused persons were first arraigned before Justice Daniel Longji in March 2018 on 17 counts bordering on criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of public funds but they had since pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Governor Wike is in Plateau State on a reconciliatory visit to ensure that the crisis among leaders of the PDP is resolved.

The governor expressed the party’s concern on the lingering misunderstanding between former Governor Jonah Jang and the governorship aspirant of the party in the state Retired Lt Gen Jeremiah Useni.

US man cleared of murder conviction after 37 years in prison

A Philadelphia man who served 37 years in prison in a case tainted by perjured testimony was cleared of the murder on Thursday and then sued the US city over his 1984 conviction.

Willie Stokes left prison earlier this month, after a United States federal judge found prosecutors never disclosed that they had charged his chief accuser with perjury after the trial.

The witness has said he was offered sex and drugs at police headquarters to frame Stokes in an unsolved 1980 dice-game slaying.

“I’m not bitter. I’m just excited to move forward,” Stokes, 60, told The Associated Press news agency after the brief morning court hearing, when prosecutors announced they would not seek to retry the case.

More than 100 people have been exonerated and released from prison in recent years in the US state of Pennsylvania, according to Marissa Boyers Bluestine of the University of Pennsylvania law school, the former executive director of the Pennsylvania Innocence Project.

But none served more prison time than Stokes.

More recently, homicides have soared in Philadelphia and other major American cities during the coronavirus pandemic and police are facing new scrutiny, including for past arrests and discrimination, in the wake of social justice protests following the death of George Floyd in 2020.

In New York last month, one of two men wrongly convicted for the 1965 murder of Black civil rights advocate Malcolm X, sued New York state for at least $20m in damages after being exonerated.

In Philadelphia, the trial witness who had identified Stokes as the killer at a preliminary hearing recanted at the murder trial, in what he later called a fit of conscience. Stokes was nonetheless convicted.

Prosecutors then charged the witness, Franklin Lee, with perjury over his pretrial testimony, and Lee went to prison for it. Stokes never knew that until 2015.

“I didn’t believe it,” Stokes said in a telephone interview. “I didn’t believe that they would let something like that happen — that they knew, and they didn’t tell me.”

Stokes said his only child, a daughter who was two when he went to prison, died about 20 years ago. He was not allowed to attend her funeral. He now lives with his mother.

“She [has] got a beautiful three-story house, so I’m not in the way,” Stokes said on Thursday, the joy in his voice evident.

Criminal lawyer Michael Diamondstein, who handled Stokes’s successful federal court appeal, called the actions of police and prosecutors in the case outrageous. “They used perjured evidence to convict him and then charged the perjurer, and never told him. And then Willie was warehoused for 38 years,” Diamondstein said.

In his view, the official misconduct stemmed from “institutional racism, or pure bias”.

In Philadelphia in those days, “the cases needed to be closed,” Diamondstein said. “The inner-city minority were interchangeable, as long as you had someone in the defendant’s chair.”

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner has championed about two dozen exoneration cases. A supervisor in his office, Matthew Stiegler, said on Thursday that the office agreed with the federal judge who found that Stokes’s constitutional rights were egregiously violated.

Both detectives who allegedly offered Lee a sex-for-lies deal to help them close the homicide case are now deceased.

“I felt weak and went along with the offer,” Lee told the federal judge in November, recalling his testimony at the May 1984 preliminary hearing.

Meanwhile, Stokes filed a lawsuit on Thursday accusing the city of “outrageous police misconduct”. The lawsuit names the estates of the now-deceased detectives as defendants.

Two surviving prosecutors also named in the suit, now in private practice, did not immediately return messages from AP seeking comment on Thursday. At least one has given a statement saying he does not remember the case, according to court files.

The Philadelphia police department declined to comment on the case. The city did not immediately return a message seeking comment on Thursday.

Fans blame Okoye for Eagles defeat

Fans on Sunday blamed newly signed Watford goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, for his role in Nigeria’s exit at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The Super Eagles suffered a 1-0 defeat to Tunisia to crash out of the AFCON tournament.

Okoye failed to save Youssef Msakni’s long-range strike tow minutes after the restart as the Carthage Eagles booked a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament at the expense of Nigeria, who were tagged favourites ahead of the encounter.

Disappointed fans immediately took to social media to blame the goalkeeper, who they believed should have done better with Msakni’s shot.

A Twitter user with the name FunkeAkin wrote, “Maduka Okoye or whatever he is called should please go back to his fashion business, we are done!”

With a photograph of former Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, Max-Well, tweeted, “The legend we miss.”

Callmesammylex echoed the opinion of Max-Well posting a picture of Enyeama with the caption, “The guy I’ll always miss and remember as a Nigeria goalkeeper.”

Another Twiter user Olagbegi Star-struck said, “This guy reminds me of Victor Valdes of FC Barcelona then. Fine USELESS boy on the pitch.”

Lukayo jokingly added, “This is the reason why Okoye could not keep that shot. Why Buhari go collect this jersey, video conference never dey enough.”

Nnadi simply wrote, “Okoye too sexy for the shot.”

Iam_Sannwalaw added, “Hello make una tell Okoye say I no wan see am for this Nigeria again.”

Lagos businessman tortures apprentice to death over missing N1,000, flees

A businessman, identified simply as Uchechukwu, aka Alloy Omo Jesu, is on the run after allegedly torturing his 11-year-old apprentice to death in the Ogba area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the apprentice, Sunday, was accused of stealing N1,000 when Uchechukwu, who was bent on making him confess to the allegation, descended on him.

The victim was said to have died in the process as the suspect fled the community.

Our correspondent learnt that the manager of Uchechukwu’s gas business, Blessing, while closing on Saturday, January 8, 2022, discovered that N1,000 was missing from the total sales  for the day.

To detect how the money went missing, Blessing demanded an explanation from Sunday, who handled sales that day.

Another apprentice, Godwin, told our correspondent who visited the shop on Inuobimi Street, Ogba, last Thursday, that Sunday gave an unsatisfactory response, prompting everyone, including Uchechukwu, to suspect him.

Another apprentice, Godwin, told our correspondent who visited the shop on Inuobimi Street, Ogba, last Thursday, that Sunday gave an unsatisfactory response, prompting everyone, including Uchechukwu, to suspect him.

He said, “When Blessing asked him how N1,000 went missing, he said the money was with a customer who did not complete payment for refilling gas.

“Blessing told me to follow him to meet the customer to collect the money, but when we got there, the customer said the complete money was paid.

“The customer later said the money he owed us was for another item he bought in the shop. But Sunday never told us he sold the item to the customer on that Saturday.

“On Sunday, January 9, our boss got to know about what happened and when Sunday gave no reasonable explanation, he told me to take him home.”

Godwin explained that when Uchechukwu got home around 10pm, he used a wire to torture Sunday over the missing money, adding that he and another apprentice, Stanley, left for the backyard when their colleague’s plea for mercy was ignored.

“While at the backyard, we heard Sunday screaming for help, but our boss continued to beat him and didn’t stop till he (boss) stepped out to meet us at the backyard around 1am.

“When we didn’t hear Sunday’s voice again, we thought he already had his bath and slept. We even saw him lying motionless on the floor and thought he had slept; but there was blood on his body.

“Our boss later told us to pack about N1m he had at home and said he wanted us to quickly go to the shop to keep it. Three of us, except Sunday, left the house around 1am for the shop. But when we got there, our boss said he forgot the keys at home.”

Godwin said the suspect told Stanley to wait at the shop, while he (Godwin) followed him home to get the keys.

He noted that on their way, Uchechukwu confessed that Sunday needed urgent treatment.

“I thought the N1m was with Stanley as we returned home but on the way, he said we should be on our way to a hospital. So, we took his motorcycle and headed for the hospital.

“As we were about approaching the entrance to a street, he told me that the security guards might think we were armed robbers as the two of us were on the motorcycle. He told me to get down and walk to meet him at the front, but he sped off.

“Immediately, I knew something had happened to Sunday. I quickly went to meet Stanley and we went home and met Sunday’s corpse. We raised the alarm and reported to the Baale, who assisted in reporting to the police,” Godwin said.

A chief in the area, who asked not to be identified, said youths protesting Sunday’s death burgled Uchechukwu’s shop and carted away property.

“We have not seen him since then; he ran away that early morning and we don’t support anyone that has done something bad. We heard the matter was reported at the Pen Cinema Police Station and that he was declared wanted,” he added.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, promised to get back to our correspondent.

He had yet to do so as of the time this report was filed.

Plateau drug dealer’s wife swallows cocaine to protect husband

Six persons have been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for allegedly selling drug cookies and noodles in Abuja.

They were said to have been arrested when the operatives raided a public relaxation garden.

A statement on Sunday by the spokesperson for the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, said following credible intelligence, operatives raided the centre at Wuse Zone 5 behind Shoprite, where a lady, Rachael Famiyesun, 29, who dealt in drug cookies, was arrested, alongside her salesgirl, Stella Sunday, 20.

Beside the cookies, they were also caught selling bottles of a black currant drink, popularly called Zobo, prepared with cannabis.

Babafemi said, “Another business operator in the garden, Moses Obi, 30, was also arrested with his salesgirl, Aisha Abdulrahman, 19, for selling noodles prepared with cannabis.

“A barman, Ahonye Jonah, 31, who works with the owner of the garden, was equally arrested, while one of their customers, 38-year-old Ngozi Justina Emelogu, was also picked during the raid on Wednesday, January 19.

“Two days earlier, officers of the FCT command of the agency equally raided the Zuba Yam Market, where a drug dealer, Haruna Hassan, was arrested with 19.3kg cannabis.”

Meanwhile, attempts by drug traffickers to export 1.53 kilogrammes of cocaine hidden inside hair cream to London, and another 880 grams of cocaine concealed inside synthetic hair to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as well as 3g of cocaine and 5g of cannabis to Cyprus packed inside locally-made shoes through two major courier companies in Lagos, were foiled by narcotic officers attached to the firms.

In Edo State, operatives on Tuesday, January 18, intercepted a Toyota Camry loaded with 360.4kg cannabis sativa heading for Abuja and arrested the driver, Nurudeen Subaru, 42, in Auchi, in the Etsako West area of the state.

“The following day, the Edo command officers also evacuated 111kg cannabis stored in a bush at Iruekpen, Esan West LGA, while 276 compressed blocks of the same substance weighing 248.4kg were recovered from one Austin Okongwu (aka Igwe), 45, at Agenebode, Etsako East, while moving the drug in a Lexus saloon car with reg. no. ABC 583 MJ,” the statement added.

Also on Wednesday, January 19, a raid on a drug joint in the Edo State capital, Benin, led to the arrest of three suspected drug dealers: Kelly Ogbebor, 38; Daniel Oviawe, 35, and Kelly Kenmakonam, 29, with different quantities of cocaine and heroin allegedly seized from them.

In Plateau State, attempts by 29-year-old Ifeoma Sade, wife of a drug dealer, Ifeanyi Onyeasi, 34, to swallow 12g of cocaine found in their house at Agingi, Rukuba Road, Jos, Plateau State, during an operation, was scuttled by operatives, who retrieved the drug from her throat on Sunday, January 16.

Also recovered from them was a monetary exhibit of N234, 650.

In Adamawa State, on Wednesday, January 19, the long arm of the law caught a suspected drug dealer, Adamu Musa, who had been on the run for nine months.

Also, an ex-convict, Mrs Modinat Lawal, was arrested in Kano State on Wednesday, January 19, with the 22kg cannabis sativa she brought into Nigeria from Benin Republic.

She had earlier been arrested, prosecuted and jailed for the same offence.  The Ogun State-born trafficker claimed then that her name was Bola.

Edo promotes recycling scheme app

The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project in Edo State has encouraged residents of the state to embrace its plastic waste recycling scheme to curb indiscriminate waste disposal, especially plastic, aluminum and other non-degradable materials.

The Coordinator, Edo NEWMAP, Dr. Tom Obaseki, made the call while addressing stakeholders at a one-day training workshop on the pilot deployment of the “Pick and Sell” Android App.

Obaseki said the unique model, when fully deployed, would make Edo one of the first states to deploy the tech-enabled scheme in the country.

He noted that the software would enable NEWMAP to preserve physical infrastructure constructed for erosion and flood control, which requires enormous public resources.

Addressing participants at the workshop, which comprise NEWMAP community interest groups and other stakeholders, Obaseki said most of the newly constructed drainages and ponds were all within their domains and residences and, as such, they should not allow plastic and other non-degradable materials to  clog them.

He said it was necessary to tackle the menace posed by waste to NEWMAP infrastructure by plastic so that the essence of committing public resources to the infrastructure investment would not be defeated.

I’ve peace of mind after castrating myself, says Benue school dropout

Barely three weeks after 44-year-old Terhemen Anongo, who dropped out as a 500 Level medical student of the University of Ibadan castrated himself, Anongo says he has peace in his mind and can now sleep well.

The PUNCH had in March 2021 reported how Anongo, who later turned cart pusher, removed one of his testicles.

On January 3, 2022, Anongo, who is popularly known in Gboko, Benue State as ‘doctor’, removed the second testicle.

Anongo, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone on Sunday on the effect of the full castration of his testicles, said he could sleep perfectly without waking up with sexual urge, adding that he had enough time to read his Bible.

Narrating the psychological effect of not having a wife or girlfriend, Anongo said, “You know you will have a problem in Gboko if you do not have a girlfriend. You will have to go and sleep with prostitute and pay either N1,000 or N2,000, depending on the style you want.

“After that (sleeping with prostitute), you feel guilt, it was very bad and almost suicidal. Then, if I see a woman shaking her buttocks, I sometimes resorted to buying data and watching pornography on my phone. But now, the interest in these things is simply not there.

“There is no sexual urge at all. I can sleep perfectly now. I have a lot of peace in my mind, read the Bible and understand it.”

Anongo added that if one had an urge but could not exercise it, “it makes one angry very easily.”

While stating that he personally carried out the castration, Anongo said he only decided to visit hospital because of infection he had.

“I had an infection, so I was going to hospital to dress it but now, I am better. I am beginning to cope very well and my voice is changing, it is becoming lighter,” he added.

Why I don’t want Sunday Igboho to be released —Evicted Seriki Fulani

Abdulkadri Saliu, the now-ejected Seriki Fulani of Igangan in the Ibarapa North-West Local Council Development Area of Oyo State, says he does not support the calls for the release of embattled Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho.

Igboho, who has been in a prison in Benin Republic for over six months, had stormed Igangan in January 2021 and warned the herders said to be perpetrating crimes in the town to desist from the alleged acts. He had subsequently issued an ultimatum for Saliu and his men to vacate the town.

The evicted Sarkin Fulani had relocated to Ilorin since the incident said his only consolation was the fact that he was not killed on the day he was displaced from the agrarian community.

Speaking on the January 22, 2021 incident, he said anytime he remembers the day, he always bursts into tears even as he maintained his innocence over the incidents of kidnapping and killings in the community.

“It is on record that only three Yoruba persons were kidnapped in Igangan since the problem started; others were Fulani.

“I lost my younger brother in the process. We lost several of my kinsmen. You cannot even count the number of cows that were rustled. It was a sad moment for me. I lost everything I laboured for all my life and life has been extremely hard since last year when Sunday Igboho stormed my settlement,” Daily Trust quoted him as saying.

Speaking on the earlier quit notice issued by Igboho prior to his eviction, Sarki explained that he did not handle the eviction notice with levity and he got assurance from the state government after the quit notice but he was surprised that Igboho carried out his threat without anybody challenging him.

He said, “For those seven days, the state government sent 14 police officers to us and they were guiding us but the police officers were overpowered by Sunday Igboho’s men. This is why I don’t support the call for the release of Igboho.

“I am sure he must be regretting his actions now. Any Nigerian can live in any part of the country and I have always said that there are criminals everywhere. There are criminals among Yoruba just like we have among the Fulani people. This is where we expected the government to come in and fish out those who are criminally minded.”

Saliu said one year later, he still hoped that justice would be done and he would be compensated for the properties lost during the crisis.

AFCON: Tunisia boss vows to end Super Eagles run

Tunisia head coach Mondher Kebaier is confident his team can beat Nigeria in their second-round encounter at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Carthage Eagles will keep a date with the Super Eagles at the Roumde Adija Stadium, Garoua on Sunday.

The North Africans have struggled in the competition with a win and two defeats from three games.

Kebaier however believes his side can turn the table against the three-time African champions.

“Every game has a game plan and we have a plan for tomorrow. We know that Nigeria did well in all their group games. But the knockout stage will be a different ball game,” the 51-year-old told a press conference on Saturday.

“It’s true that we have been handicapped by the absence of key players due to COVID-19. This has affected our performance.

“The rest of the players are ready to defend the colours of the nation. We will give our best against Nigeria.”

Borno: Aid worker, student, 48 others paraded for rape, attempted murder

A suspended aid worker and a student of Elkanemi College of Islamic Theology Maiduguri and 48 other persons, were on Saturday paraded by the Borno State Police Command for various criminal offences ranging from rape, attempted murder, armed robbery among others.

While the suspended iNGO staff, Huzaif Abdulra’uf, was paraded for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl, who later committed suicide for allegedly destroying her virginity, a 16-year-old SS2 student of Elkanemi College of Islamic Theology was paraded for the attempted murder of 11-year-old Sadi Mato of the same institution whom throat was slit with a razor blade by the former for refusing his errand.

Briefing journalists on Saturday at the Police headquarters, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Abdu Umar, said the 35-year-old aid worker lured the deceased into his room at 303 Housing Estate in Maiduguri and sexually abused her.

The Police Commissioner added: “The victim was said to have stabbed herself with a kitchen knife after realising that she had been raped leading to serious injury and was later pronounced dead by hospital officials.”

He further explained that in the process of taking the victim to the hospital, the accused recklessly drove against the traffic and hit a 30-year-old man.

The Commissioner assured that investigation on the matter would be discrete while the Command awaits the result of the autopsy before charging the suspect to court.

The accused, Huzaif Abdulra’uf, however, denied all the allegations, saying that the deceased victim who was his girlfriend stabbed herself to death out of jealousy as a result of female passport photos she saw in his room.

As for the 16-year-old student of Elkanemi College paraded for the attempted murder of 11-year-old Sadi Mato, the CP said: “The suspect Ahmed Goni inflicted a deep cut with a razor blade on the neck of Jibrin Mato who is currently recuperating at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.”

Similarly, the Police boss said on the 19/01/2022 at about 1730hrs, one Bulama Abba Mohammed of Dikichari area, Maiduguri, reported at Gwange Police Station that, on the same date at about 1700hrs, one Abdullahi Sanusi ‘m’ 13yrs of the same address used a sharp knife which he was using to cut sugar cane and stabbed one Mohammed Abdullahi ‘m’ 19yrs on his neck at Mallawan in Gidan Dambe area.

He said, as a result, the victim sustained a serious injury, adding that he was rushed to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for treatment but later died on the same date.

He said the suspect alleged that the deceased forcefully took away his sugar cane and refused to pay and when the suspect demanded his money, the deceased started beating him as a result of which the suspect stabbed the victim with a knife.

In a related development, the CP said one Mohammed Ashigar ‘m’ On 01/01/2022 at about 1230hrs, at Mbula-Kudge village, Askira/Uba LGA, used a stick and hit one Jauro Saleh ‘m’ of Mbula-Kudge on his head over a misunderstanding they had two months ago that they were playing using abusive words between themselves which turned to a quarrel and they fought.

He said the deceased hit him with a stick and the suspect did not revenge when they were separated, adding that two months later, the suspect located the deceased and took revenge by hitting him with a stick on his head as a result of which he died on the spot.

The Borno Police Commissioner urged residents to be wary of syndicates using fake bank alerts to defraud individuals of their goods in the process of buying and selling.

He said the 51 suspects paraded for 19 various criminal offences were arrested within the month of January this year.

Driver crushed to death in Anambra road crash

A fatal road traffic crash occurred at the Obinaetiti Akwuzu junction by Nteje-Onitsha Expressway, late on Friday night.

According to an eyewitness, the crash was between two vehicles: an unidentified driver of a blue Mercedes 911 with registration number XA129AWK and unidentified driver of a Honda Accord car with registration number RBX155PC.

The probable cause of the crash was attributed to obstruction and overspeeding.

The eyewitness said the accident occurred when the driver of the Honda car, driving on a high speed, hit the Mercedes Benz 911 from behind.

The driver of the Mercedes Benz 911 had sighted a heap of sand and gravel on the road and slowed down to avoid it while the driver of the Honda car, who did not watch, rammed into the vehicle and crashed.

The sand was being used by a construction company.

Three male adults were involved in the crash. Two persons were rescued unhurt while one person died.

As of the time of filling this report, the dead victim had been deposited at the Wisdom Mortuary, Awkuzu.

The truck was taken to the Federal Road Safety Corps office at Nteje, while efforts are being made by the rescue team to clear the obstruction.

The Federal Road Safety Corps Sector Commander, Anambra State, Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, commiserated with the family of the dead victim.

He seriously warned the motoring public to desist from excessive speeding and be at alert while driving.

“Traffic rules and regulations must be obeyed at all times,” he added.
